How the word counter works

Words are counted with your browser's built-in language rules, so hyphenated words, contractions and non-English text such as Chinese and Japanese are handled correctly. Reading time assumes 238 words per minute (an average adult silent reading speed) and speaking time assumes 150 words per minute.
